Classroom gross motor development sensory break printables

Children need gross motor development to be able to stand up from the ground independently, take their jumper on and off, climb play equipment, throw and catch a ball, walk up and down stairs, etc.

25% of children are currently starting school without the gross motor skills that they need for learning and school readiness. This equals about 5 students per classroom who will find it difficult to sit for long periods of time, move around the classroom smoothly, and understand personal space between their own body and their peers.

These gross motor movement breaks are important for learning because they:

  • promote gross motor development
  • increase oxygen flow to the brain
  • improve student focus and attention
  • reduce meltdowns in the classroom
  • build student confidence
  • promote physical activity and coordination

More oxygen to the brain means more oxygen (fuel) provided to the brain for thinking, learning, emotion regulation, and focus.
